How to organize products on Shopify?

Organize your Product Categories

Assessing your product categories is critical to ensure that your store is easy to navigate and locate what customers are searching for. Here are some tips to help you manage your items on Shopify:

Identify your product categories

Start by looking at the product/ service you sell and categorizing them.

For example, if you sell apparel, you can have categories such as men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing.

Evaluate the number of items in each category

Look at how many items are in each category. If a category has many items, you can separate it into subcategories to help consumers locate what they’re searching for.

Consider categories’ structure

Think about the relationship between your products in each category. Some categories might be subcategories of others.

For example, “shirts” can be a “men’s clothing subcategory.”

Use clear product description

Ensure your category titles have clear and descriptive names that appropriately reflect the items within them. Avoid using vague or too broad categories that may lead to customer confusion.

Use filters to refine search results

Filters can also be used to assist customers in narrowing their search results within each category.

For example, inside the “men’s apparel” category, you can add size, color, and price range filters.

Master Product Tags

Product tags can help you organize your items on Shopify and make it simpler for your customers to find what they’re searching for. Here are some ways to help you organize your Shopify product with product tags:

Identify your product tags

Start by identifying the different attributes or characteristics that your products have in common. For example, you can have color, size, material, style, or seasonality tags.

Make a tag list

Once you’ve found the different attributes or characteristics, make a tag list that you can use to categorize your items. Make sure your tags are descriptive and specific.

Add tags to your products

Once you’ve compiled your list of tags, add them to your Shopify products. You can provide several tags to each product to help classify it in various ways.

Use tags to build collections

With Shopify, you can use tags to create collections. For instance, you can establish a collection of all rose gold items, or a group of cotton products.

Build tags-based filters

You can also create tags-based filters for your products. Customers will be able to tweak their search results and locate exactly what they’re looking for.

For example, you can create size, color, or material filters.

Monitor and update your tags

Last but not least, checking and updating your tags frequently is critical. This will ensure that your product tags remain precise and up to date.

Build up Collections for Easy Navigation

Organizing products on Shopify by creating collections can be an excellent way to help your customers browse your store and discover what they’re searching for. So how to build up collections for them?

Simple Collection is a collection grouping together similar products. This collection type is suitable for stores with a small or average number of products and helps prevent customer confusion.

You can also construct a Nested Collection, which categorizes and produces smaller-scale collections to find the product structure further. For example, you can create separate T-shirt collections based on its type, such as Active, Basic, Premium, Graphic, and Croptop, etc.

You can also tag each product with a size or weight, such as Large, Medium, Small, XS, S, M, L, or XL, to assist buyers and even you quickly locate desired items.

Another type is the Discounted Collection, which combines discounted items for a limited time to enhance sales with an ongoing promotional campaign. Discounted Collections can be referred to as Wholesale Collections by B2B enterprises, as wholesale items often provide lower pricing or greater discounts than retail products.

How to Sort Products in Shopify?

Unlike some other platforms that allow users to drag and drop products to rearrange their display orders manually, Shopify only accepts sorting orders configured under the Collection options to organize products on Shopify.

This means that Shopify store owners must rely on Shopify’s pre-set sorting options, such as sorting by price, date, or popularity, and cannot manually organize the order of products inside a collection.

While this limitation may pose challenges for store owners who desire a more specific product display order, Shopify’s pre-set sorting options can still provide a practical solution for most store owners to effectively organize and present their products to customers.

So how to sort products in Shopify?

Step 1: Log in to your Shopify Admin panel > Go to the Products section.

Step 2: Click on the Sort button near the page’s top right corner.

Step 3: In the Sort Products dialog box, select the sorting option to apply to your products. You can sort by the following options:

  • Best Selling: Products are sorted based on the number of units sold.
  • Alphabetical: Products are sorted alphabetically by product name.
  • Price: Products are sorted by price, from low to high or high to low.
  • Date: Products are sorted by the date they were added or last updated.

Step 4: Once you have selected your desired sorting option > Click the Apply button to save the changes.

Step 5: To apply a secondary sorting option > Click the Add another sort option link and select the second option.

After selecting all desired sorting options > Save button to apply the changes to your product list.

Step 6: To view your sorted product list, click the All products dropdown menu and select the sorting option you applied.
